Artist Bio
Jim Bondly is a North Dakota–based photographer whose work in digital color and large-scale archival pigment prints captures the full spectrum of creation—from intimate macro details to expansive cosmic imagery. Born on the plains near the Missouri River and now living in the Turtle Mountains, Bondly draws deeply from the landscapes, cultures, and spiritual rhythms of the region he calls home.
Practicing photography since 1965, Bondly has developed his craft through decades of hands-on experience, guided by influential mentors and formal study at the University of Hawaii. His work reflects both technical mastery and a contemplative perspective, blending observation with a reverence for the natural and human world.
Bondly gained international recognition through the global “My City” project, a competition featuring over 1,500 entries worldwide. Representing the small rural town of Bottineau, North Dakota, his work advanced to the final four alongside Mumbai, Paris, and Cleveland—ultimately earning second place.
His photographs are exhibited in galleries across North Dakota, including the North Dakota Museum of Art, and are held in the University of North Dakota's permanent collection. His work has also been featured in multiple publications.
Bondly’s ongoing photographic projects include :
Faith on the Prairies, a study of rural churches across the Dakota Plains;
Harvest, documenting the richness of autumn in the region;
DAKHOTA, capturing Native American celebrations and dance;
Meditation, a visual reflection on the beauty and divinity of creation.
Through his lens, Jim Bondly offers a powerful and enduring tribute to place, faith, and the vastness of the world around us.
